Sharjah: the cultural capital next door, and what is actually open this season

Fourteen things to do, from the Rain Room to the Khorfakkan amphitheatre, with prices, hours and the seasonal closures that other guides miss. Then the restaurants and hotels to start with.

Sharjah is where the UAE keeps its museums, its art foundation and its restored old town, and it is the emirate visitors from Dubai most often skip. That is a mistake, but a specific one: Sharjah rewards a day with a plan and punishes a day of wandering, because its attractions are spread across a city with serious traffic and an east coast ninety minutes away.

Timing matters here more than in Dubai. The Sharjah Biennial, the reason the art world comes, is not running in 2026; the seventeenth opens on 21 January 2027. Sharjah Safari, the big wildlife park, is seasonal and had not announced its 2026–27 dates when we checked. The Rain Room, by contrast, runs all year and sells out at weekends. Every entry below says which of those it is.

And the thing every visitor asks: the emirate is dry. No alcohol in any restaurant, hotel or shop. It is also cheaper, quieter and, in the old quarter, more beautiful than anything Dubai has restored.

Before you go

  • Dubai to Sharjah is 20 minutes off-peak and 60 to 90 in the evening rush. Go against the flow: into Sharjah after 09:30, back before 16:00.
  • The emirate is dry. Plan the evening accordingly.
  • Friday mornings close most museums until 16:00.
  • The east coast (Khorfakkan, Kalba) is a separate day: 90 minutes each way.
  • Museum tickets are AED 10 to 35; the Rain Room is AED 25 and must be booked.
