Abu Dhabi: what to see, where to go, and the prices that changed this month

Twenty things worth your day, from the Grand Mosque that stopped being free on 1 September to the Guggenheim that opens in December. Then the six restaurants and six hotels to start with, each linked to its full page.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque @ Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi rewards a plan in a way Dubai does not. Dubai’s attractions cluster along one coast and you can improvise between them. The capital’s are spread across four islands and two deserts, its museums have opened in a rush (three since November 2025, a fourth in December), and several of its most-quoted facts changed this month. This page is the plan: what is open, what it costs today, what it costs to skip, and where to sleep and eat once you have decided.

What changed. The Grand Mosque charges admission from 1 September 2026. The Louvre’s own ticket page now shows daily opening while the tourism board still says closed on Mondays. The Zayed National Museum opened on 3 December 2025 and the Natural History Museum on 22 November 2025, both at AED 70. teamLab Phenomena has been open since April 2025. The Guggenheim opens on 11 December 2026. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix runs 4 to 6 December. Every price below carries its source and the day we read it.

How to use it. Read the twenty entries by group: the icons, the new museums, beach and water, Yas Island, and the day trips. Then the two short lists at the bottom point you to the full restaurant and hotel pages, which are where the neighbourhood, price band and closure detail lives.

Before you go

  • Abu Dhabi is a driving city. Budget 25 to 40 minutes between the mosque, Saadiyat and Yas, longer at 17:00.
  • Dress for the mosque: long, loose, ankle-length clothing; women cover their hair. Abayas are provided but the policy was updated in September 2026; check the mosque's page.
  • Alcohol is served in hotels and on Al Maryah Island and Yas Bay, not in street restaurants.
  • Friday mornings close the mosque to non-worshippers (09:00 to 11:30) and change hours elsewhere.
  • November to March is the season. September is still 40°C by lunchtime; plan mornings outdoors and museums after two.

The icons

Four buildings that justify the trip on their own. The mosque at dusk, the Louvre’s rain-of-light dome, the presidential palace you can actually walk through, and the 18th-century fort the city grew from.

Most guides published before September still say free. The online access pass is still required, and the mosque’s own pages give two different closing times (20:30 and 22:00); plan on 20:30.

Questions readers ask

Is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free?

Not since 1 September 2026. Overseas visitors pay AED 10, Emirates ID holders AED 5, tour-operator groups AED 8. Worshippers, visitors over 60, children under three and People of Determination enter free. You still need the free online access pass, and the mosque closes to visitors on Friday mornings.

How much is the Louvre Abu Dhabi?

AED 70 for adults on the museum's own ticket page, with under-18s free. The official page lists daily opening, with galleries closing at 18:30 Monday to Thursday and 20:30 Friday to Sunday. Older guides say closed on Mondays; the official page is the one to trust.

Is the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi open?

Not yet. DCT Abu Dhabi announced on 28 July 2026 that it opens on 11 December 2026.

How many days do you need in Abu Dhabi?

Three covers the mosque, the Louvre and one new museum, a Saadiyat beach afternoon and a Yas day. Five adds Al Ain or a night in the Liwa desert. A day trip from Dubai gets you the mosque and the Louvre and nothing else done properly.

When is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2026?

4 to 6 December 2026 at Yas Marina Circuit, with the race on Sunday 6 December, per the Formula 1 calendar. Yas Island hotels sell out months ahead.

What is the best time of year to visit Abu Dhabi?

November to March for temperatures under 30°C. September and October are still hot by midday but the museums, the mosque at dusk and the Yas indoor parks work; hotel rates are lower and the beaches are quiet.
